In German “grob” means something like rough or raw. Those who deal regularly in design might at most encounter a "rough draft" or a “rough idea” - but "rough graphics"? What is that supposed to mean? Is there a ruffian behind the desk? To dedicate our efforts to Grobgrafik is a project that has occupied us for some years now! /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// |
Our first encounter with Grobgrafik took place in a tidy little town in Normandy, a resort whose layout must have been drafted on the drawing-board. A system of one-way streets, built to regulate the traffic chaos during the high season, seemed completely useless in the off season. All signs were simply crossed out with big, black pieces of tape. Speechless, we stood in front of these brutally crossed-out signs and the first thing that came to our mind was "Grobgrafik". /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ///////// //////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////////////// //////////// ///////////// |
In a sense, one could define Grobgrafik as the process by which someone improperly interferes with an existing design. One of many examples could be the deli owner who simply updates his manufactured light box price-list every once in a while with a marker. /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// |
On a functional level, this strategy works: for the customer the prices are legible and the previous sign has been effectively repealed. But from a designer’s point of view, it raises a number of questions, such as: is the design indifferent towards such interference? Can you, as a designer or artist, learn from such encroachments or even derive formal principles from it? /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// //// ////// ////////// //////// ////// /// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// |
Real Grobgrafik can have many causes and shapes, and often emerges totally random or by accident. By collecting and presenting such cases of Grobgrafik, we don´t just want to be amused by them, but rather embrace and celebrate them since they hold such wild and unintended beauty! /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// |
At the same time, we understand our work as Grobgrafik too. Employed in this sense, the term doesn´t just stand for a random phenomenon, but for our stance on fancy or overly slick design. /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// |
On our website we therefore follow multiple aims: in the "Inspiration" folder you will find some delightful documentation of Grobgrafik in the wild. Beyond that, our webpage also functions as a platform for our artist and designer team to showcase their work and set a joyful, decelerated “grobgrafik” signal. /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// /////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////////////// //////////// ///////////// ///////// ////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// //////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// ////////// //////// ///////// ////////// /////////// |

Welcome to Grobgrafik!
Yeah, New year, new design!
In the beginning of 2011 we have totally reworked our website. You are now looking at the old version made from cardboard, go here to visit the new one. It's much faster, more complex and easy to use!
The Papergirl Festival has been a blast! Thanks to everyone involved!
There is a brandnew publication about it with 90 pages full of essays, interviews, instructions and photos. Have a look or order directly here.
Also hot of the press comes the new series of larger than life-sized prints by Gould called „Sankt Nimmerlein“. The project is about modern saints, which might be needed figuratively for some of the major issues nowadays like torture, financial crisis, global warming, sexual abuse, homelessness, etc.
It's still in progress, but you can see already a lot of pictures here.
In 2010 we had a show called "Make it fit" together with Specter at the great Brooklynite Gallery, New York.
There are photos of both our works to be found here.
Our Identikit series has been shown in three museums:
"HELP! Social appeal in poster"
at the museum of design Zurich.
"the turnaround. 20 years later" at the museum of art Cottbus. And "Construction site Identity" at the Museum Kreuzberg, Berlin.
Highly recommended is the book "Ring Frei" (exploring berlin's offsides with the Ringbahn). It has been designed and released by Aisha, Alexander Schug, Andrea Schulz and Léo Favier.
more informations in the shows- and Projects-folder.
have fun on our grobgrafik website!
